Born in 1976 in Shanxi, China, Fu Xiaotong graduated from the Oil Painting Department of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts in 2000, and later obtained a Masters degree in Experimental Art from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2013. She currently teaches at the School of Arts of North China University of Technology, and lives in Beijing.

 

Her artistic portfolio encompasses two major categories: intricate paper pinhole creations and immersive spatial installations. In her paper-based works, Fu Xiaotong innovatively extends the legacy of Chinese traditional craftsmanship, interweaving new narratives by combining the cultural essence of Xuan paper, ink, needles, and thread. Her exploration transcends the boundaries of technique and expression, offering fresh interpretations of these facets of Chinese culture. Her other body of work comprises spatial installations, sculptures, and performative video pieces. By invoking the ancient Egyptian deity “NUN”, she probes the obscure ties between the myths, history, and beliefs of antiquity and their resonance in modern society. This reflects her interest in the clandestine interplay between human spirituality and the intricate tapestry of contemporary life.

 

Fu Xiaotong was awarded the inaugural Asian Female Artist Award in 2019, jointly presented by the SOVEREIGN Asian Art Foundation in Hong Kong and Vogue Hong Kong. Her works are collected by institutions including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney, Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Fidelity Investments Group, and the Zhejiang Art Museum in China.
