ZHENG ZAIDONG

Mountains, Water and the Moon  2015.03.07 - 05.28

Zheng Zaidong is a unique painter. He lives a distinctly individual way of life that reflects his characteristic attitude towards modern-day China, and, at the same time, he pursues the ancient Chinese literati spirit and their lifestyle. Zheng’s paintings are poetic, very modern in the form, but extremely traditional beneath the surface. In many ways, it could be said that he is a visual poet who paints the nature of life through the things that he sees, the places he travels, and the sentiments that he senses.

In this serie of his new work, Zheng Zaidong adopts rich colors and creates a psychedelic atmosphere. He paints these works layer by layer with thin pigment colors, which is very similar to both the idea and the technique of using color in traditional Chinese paintings.

Some of his new work seem mute and distant, with hardly any trace of human presence, and yet they evoke, in their entirety, the colorful restoration and re-interpretation of the ink-washed past that has been shot through the subdued intensity and reminiscence conveyed in each individual work. On top of this, each of Zheng Zaidong’s new paintings engages the audience with different voices, which have been buried deep in the fundamental core of Chinese painting and literature’s history.

Zheng Zaidong says :“ I am interested in merging the connotations of psychology into Chinese tradition.” In the works of his recent years, his artistic conception is even more pure and yet remote, which is certainly a result of his fruitful life experiences. With his sparks of inspiration, Zheng is sure to bring new insights into his life and art.
